We had the black taxi tour from our Grand Circle tour on the ship Corinthian. We did not know that there was still conflict in Belfast and were shocked to learn that there is still a wall between the factions and the gates actually close at night. Our driver was fantastic! We were there on July 12th which is a significant date for the troubles. We witnessed sites that were going to be used for demonstrations that evening. Although there was no media coverage of the July 12th activities, we learned that there was unrest, some rioting, and conflicts with the authorities.
Our tour was with Robert and wonderful man who has lived with the troubles. We were well informed with a bais opinion of what has taken place and what is still in place. May we all find Peace. Thanks Robert for all of your valued information.
We are so thankful that Grand Circle Cruises included a Black Cab tour for us while we were in Belfast. Gerard, our driver, grew up in the time of the Troubles and knew personal loss. The places he showed us and the accounts he gave will stay with us always. Along the way, we made many stops to get out and explore. He answered questions with ease. We had hosted Ulster teens in an exchange some years ago and were pleased to know he had visited America in that program which sought to foster trust between Catholic and Protestant youth.
